Supporting Sustainable Regeneration

In Brief

As part of a £15million regeneration project our client was contracted to refurbish a historic 200-bed hall of residence.
Works included overhauling the building fabric, retaining heritage features including original woodwork and parquet floors, installing new ensuite and shared bathrooms and updating the interiors. All works needed to be completed while the campus was fully operational.
Having worked with us for over 12 years, they brought our metal recycling and waste management specialist in to handle all waste streams during the project.

Modernising a precious legacy

The historical site was the first purpose-built hall of residence on the Campus and the first hall at the university to be constructed for female residents.
Constructed in 1928, with later extensions in the 1950s and 1970s, the hall needed urgent repairs due to asbestos contamination. A full refurbishment stripped the building back to its original structure with the removal and reinstating of all mechanical and electrical services.

Managing waste materials

Ward provided comprehensive waste services from kick-off to conclusion, including on-site support to achieve best practice for efficient waste management.

Segregated waste solutions including skips for wood, plasterboard, hardcore, mixed general waste and metals helped to reduce carbon usage and improve environmental performance. Grab hire services were included for mixed construction waste and a scheduled, on site wheelie bin service collected general waste streams including mixed recycling.

Hazardous waste and Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) collection services were provided as required for mastic tubes, expanding foam aerosols, solvent-based paints and asbestos, as well as electric equipment and cables.

Monthly site visits to review service levels were also implemented and the team supplied waste segregation signs to simplify the waste management process.

Building towards a sustainable future

Sustainability was another key focus of the project, ensuring that the construction work provided a greener future for generations of students ahead. Air-source heat pumps were installed to provide low-carbon heating and electric heating provides hot water.

Our expertise was invaluable in helping to minimise the project’s carbon footprint. The team provided access to the SmartWaste portal, a waste and environment reporting tool for recording waste collections and adding project updates. This facilitated with monitoring utilities used on site to assist with BREEAM reporting requirements while helping minimise environmental impact.
