Mandatory Digital Waste Tracking – What It Means for Your Business

100% Compliance Full audit trails for every stream

Reporting Carbon data ready for your ESG reports

The UK generates over 200 million tonnes of waste every year. While some paper and digital tracking systems already exist, there has never been a single, comprehensive way to show where waste is created, who handles it, and where it ultimately ends up.

That is about to change.

The UK Government is developing a nationwide Digital Waste Tracking Service in partnership with the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Initially planned for April 2025, the launch is now expected by April 2026. Once mandatory, the system will apply to all waste types and all businesses—no exemptions.

Why is Mandatory Digital Waste Tracking Being Introduced?

The service is built on five key principles:

Bullet point

Tracking Where Waste Ends Up: For the first time, regulators, industry, and the public will be able to see the complete picture—how much waste is produced, where it is processed, and how much is recycled.

Bullet point

Making Compliance Simple: A standardised digital process will replace inconsistent paperwork, making it easier for businesses to stay compliant and prove Duty of Care.

Bullet point

Helping Companies Improve Sustainability: Accurate, up-to-date data will help businesses measure performance, set targets, and move towards circular economy models.

Bullet point

Tackling Waste Crime: Waste crime costs the UK economy an estimated £1 billion per year. A mandatory, traceable system will make it harder for illegal operators to dump or mismanage waste.

Bullet point

Bringing All Waste Data Together: Existing fragmented reporting systems will be replaced by one UK-wide platform.
